YOW, BABY! UNIV. OF MD FINISHED $500,000 IN THE BLACK

The Univ. of MD finished the '99 FY ended June 30 with
an operating surplus of "about" $500,000, according to Steve
Berkowitz of the WASHINGTON POST. The surplus will be put
"toward scholarships" during FY 2000. The "greatest" boost
came from the school's Terrapin Club, the athletic
     department's booster group, which raised a "record" $3.3M --
more than $575,000 over its annual goal. AD Debbie Yow
added that playing a home football game against GA Tech at
PSINet Stadium "enabled the department to clear" $450,000
more than it would have if the game was played at Univ. of
MD's Byrd Stadium. The department received $560,000 from a
renegotiated credit card agreement (WASHINGTON POST, 8/10).
MOVING ON: Sandy Barbour, one of eight female ADs at
NCAA Div. I-A schools, resigned as Tulane's AD on Monday,
according to Trey Iles of the New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE.
Barbour stepped down after three-years as AD and eight years
with Tulane. While Barbour said the move was her decision,
university sources said that Barbour's "management style and
the athletic department's bleak financial forecast
contributed to her departure" (TIMES-PICAYUNE, 8/10).
