USSF EXPECTED TO FILE SUIT AGAINST WWC TEAM FOR FALL TOUR

The U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) is "expected" to file
suit "as early as today" against the U.S. WWC team in an
"attempt to block" the team's planned 11-city fall tour,
according to Bill Ward of the TAMPA TRIBUNE. An anonymous
USSF official said that attorneys from both sides will meet
to discuss the SFX-backed tour. If a "compromise cannot be
reached," the USSF will request an injunction to "protect
our entities and how they are represented." The official
adds that there are "certain provisions" within each of the
players' contracts that "conflict" with the tour. Among
them is a "stipulation" that when a certain number of WWC
members are gathered for an event, it is technically a
"national team" event under USSF jurisdiction. Ward reports
that there are also "possible sponsor contradictions,
particularly with Nike, which has poured million ... into
     USSF's men's and women's programs" (TAMPA TRIBUNE, 7/27).
