SPORTSLINE SHARES DROP AS SECOND-QUARTER LOSS IS WIDENED

Shares of SportsLine USA "fell more than" 17% on Friday
after reporting that its second-quarter loss "widened on
higher expenses," according to BLOOMBERG NEWS. SportsLine's
second-quarter loss widened to $12.4M, or $.55 a share, from
$7.51M, or $.41 a share, a year ago. The quarter report
caused SportsLine shares to fall $7 to close at $32, in
trading of "about" 1.72 million shares, "more than triple
the three-month daily average." Earlier, the shares dropped
to 29.75, the lowest level in "more than" three months.
SportsLine attributed the loss to "spending on its online
sporting-goods stores and its European sites." Phil Leigh
analyst Raymond James said "people are wondering whether
SportsLine is getting in too late," and if SportsLine's move
to "sell more sporting goods would squeeze profit margins
and lead to higher costs as it tries to keep up with
stronger rivals." Other analysts "were disappointed" that
     SportsLine's loss "wasn't smaller" (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 7/23).
