NAMES IN THE NEWS

          ABC has pre-empted Barbara Walters' "20/20" interview
     with ALEXANDRA STEVENSON on Friday for coverage of the
     memorial service in N.Y. for John F. Kennedy Jr. and his
     wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy (USA TODAY, 7/22).
          OTHER NAMES: The NBA has given a "polite warning" to
     Grizzlies first-round draft pick STEVE FRANCIS for
     "allegedly flashing a gang hand signal" in a pre-draft
     photograph.  Francis' hand signal was "similar" to the one
     that Crips gang members use to "indicate a 'hit' on a rival
     Blood gang member."  NBA VP/Sports Media Relations CHRIS
     BRIENZA: "The NBA was made aware (of the supposed hand
     signal), we looked into it, talked to Steve and he insisted
     he was just goofing around for a photo" (Vancouver PROVINCE,
     7/21)....JESSE JACKSON's Rainbow/PUSH Coalition has asked
     for Congressional hearings later this year into "minority
     hiring practices in college football" (CBS SportsLine,
     7/21)....Yankees P DAVID CONE said that "he didn't intend to
     take a veiled shot" at First Lady HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON's
     "supposed allegiance" to the Yankees when he called NYC
     Mayor RUDY GIULIANI "a sincere Yankees fan."  But Cone added
     on the First Lady: "A true baseball fan or a true Yankees
     fan? I don't know.  I've never seen her at Yankee Stadium, I
     know that. ... If [Hillary and President Clinton] ever want
     to come here, we'd be glad to show them around" (N.Y. DAILY
     NEWS, 7/22).  Cone presented last night's "Top Ten Signs The
     Pressure Is Getting To You During A Perfect Game." No. 9)
     "You decide to leave after the seventh inning to beat the
     traffic."  No. 8) "You think, `Hey, maybe Dan Quayle
     wouldn't be such a bad president.'"  No. 6) "You start to
     wonder if maybe Dr. J is your real father."  No. 4) "Instead
     of shaking off the catcher, you flip off the catcher."  No.
     2) "After each strike, you rip off your jersey and run
     around in a black sports bra" (CBS, 7/21).
