GUNN'S GOING FOR THE ROSES AND HE'S SEEKING A SPONSOR

Twenty-year-old tennis player Lawrence Gunn is "banking
on a sponsor wanting to take a chance on him and his story:
a talented black kid from the inner city," according to
Meri-Jo Borzilleri of the MIAMI HERALD. After "a spotty but
occasionally brilliant junior tennis career and one year of
college tennis," Gunn is turning pro, likely in September.
He has "no agent. No management company. No coach." But
he "wants to be on his way." Borzilleri notes that "one
problem" for Gunn is that companies are currently "drooling
over" Harvard sophomore James Blake, an African-American who
recently turned pro and was the NCAA's No. 1 player this
year. Fila's Marty Mulligan: "It's not going to be easy for
him. [Gunn] is fairly unknown" (MIAMI HERALD, 7/22).
