"Sports Tonight" led with Expos-Yankees and followed with
Yankees P David Cone receiving a key to the city from Mayor
Rudy Giuliani. ESPN's 11:00pm ET "SportsCenter" led with
D'Backs P Randy Johnson's return to Seattle and an update on
D'Backs-Mariners, followed by Expos-Yankees. FSN's 11:00pm
ET "Primetime" (Fox Sports Net South) led with Expos-Yankees
and followed with Mets-Orioles (THE DAILY).
TURN ON YOUR STADIUM LIGHTS: ABC Sports President
Howard Katz said he is "worried about running out of
daylight" during the Tiger Woods-David Duval primetime
telecast on August 2. Katz: "I.M.G. and the players
insisted on playing in three hours, but my guess is we'll
join with the putts on 2 or the tee shots on 3." In N.Y.,
Richard Sandomir writes that "even if ABC does not show" the
first two holes, viewers "will see the end, in regulation,
or a playoff, for which the 17th and 18th holes will be
lighted with stadium-type lighting" (N.Y. TIMES, 7/21).
NOTES: CBS Sports President Sean McManus, on CBS'
inability to switch Saturday's Ameritech Senior Open to a
cable channel during news coverage of the JFK Jr. plane
crash: "We do have a cable outlet in TNN, to which we
switched an auto race so we could start NCAA Final Four
coverage. We probably need to take a look at this in the
future" (USA TODAY, 7/21)....Turner Sports signed Matt
McConnell to a multi-year deal to serve as play-by-play
voice for the team on both Turner South and WUPA-UPN.
McConnell previously handled play-by-play for the Penguins
(Thrashers)....Fox "was the most-watched network in
primetime" for the week of July 10-18, the "first time it
has taken the top spot" since airing Super Bowl XXXIII in
January. Fox's MLB All-Star Game "was the most-watched
program of the week" (HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, 7/21).
