CA-based Never Compromise President Vikash Sanyal
"estimates that his company got about" $1M in free TV
advertising by having Jean Van de Velde use its Delta2
putter during the British Open, according to USA TODAY's
Jerry Potter. TV viewers saw "either the distinctive black-
gray-black color" of the putter or the Never Compromise logo
"stamped across the back" of the putter every time the
"camera zoomed in" on a Van de Velde putt. Sanyal "chose to
market his putters" by giving them to LPGA and Senior PGA
Tour players, and that "has worked well," as 23 events have
been won by players using the putters (USA TODAY, 7/21).
RAINY DAY WOMEN: Sunderland of Scotland, which has been
the official rainwear of the LPGA for 10 years, is expanding
its involvement with the Tour by offering LPGA-logoed
merchandise to clubs and resorts. Sunderland has also
provided rainwear for all five Solheim Cup events (LPGA).
NOTES: Orlimar ran a full-page ad in yesterday's USA
TODAY with the header: "On May 27, at the Kemper Open, 54
PGA Tour pros played with 70 Orlimar TriMetal Fairway Woods.
We can only show you five of them." The ad shows photos of
John Cook, Jim Furyk, Skip Kendall, Franklin Langham and
Dennis Paulson and reads, "Some of the players that are
using TriMetals week after week may not be using Orlimar
headcovers" (THE DAILY)....Nike Golf President Bob Wood, on
Nike's golf efforts, "We must focus on ourselves, not the
competition. Five years ago, many thought that Nike
couldn't challenge Adidas in soccer. Now we are close to
overtaking them. If in five years Nike isn't a major player
in golf then we haven't succeeded" (WEB STREET GOLF, 7/19).
