A NEW ATTITUDE: TURNER CREATES NEW UNIT FOR SPORTS PROMOS

Turner Broadcasting System's sports ad sales unit has
partnered with the NBA to create a new promotional campaign
touting the '99-2000 season, according to Jim Cooper of
MEDIAWEEK, who writes that the effort stems from Turner's
new sponsorship sales, marketing and promotions team. "NBA
Tip Off 1999" will create ad sales and promo opportunities
tied to the start of the season, with incremental ad revenue
from national advertisers such as AT&T, AmEx, FedEx, Nestle,
Sprite, IBM and McDonald's. The "budding unit" is part of
the Turner Sports Sales division, led by Turner Exec VP Mark
Lazarus. Cooper notes that the unit "is unusual in that it
is part of Turner Sports Sales rather than a division that
reports to TNT or TBS," the two nets that carry the NBA.
Lazarus estimates that previous efforts from the new unit
accounted for 5-10% of Turner Sports' ad revenue and the
group will contribute another 10% in 2000 (MEDIAWEEK, 7/12).
