EVENTS & ATTRACTION NOTES

X GAMES: In four days of X Games competition, 140,000
people have visited the Games' venues, "contributing to
massive traffic congestion" in the downtown S.F. area.
Monday's attendance "was expected to be about 30,000" (USA
TODAY, 6/29). In S.F., Emil Guillermo wrote that "it's just
hard to imagine anything more contrived than the X Games."
Guillermo: "The X Games are to sport what the Monkees were
to real music" (S.F. EXAMINER, 6/27). In Pittsburgh, Bill
Modoono wrote that the X Games "are a joke." More Modoono,
on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC providing 30 hours of X Games
coverage: "TV exposure used to be a yard stick sports
writers could use to determine the importance of sports.
Now, who knows?" (Pittsburgh TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 6/27).
