OLYMPIC NOTES

SLOC DOLLAR SIGNS: SLOC President Mitt Romney said that
he will "solicit contributions from virtually all of Utah's
major corporations" for support of the 2002 Games. Romney:
"I am guessing that I will get something from every one of
them. And I will give myself" (DESERET NEWS, 6/27). In
Salt Lake City, Jerry Spangler wrote that Romney "is
currently in the midst of major fund-raising campaign," with
a goal of getting companies to contribute $1M, $5M or "even
up to" $20M to the Games. Romney: "There is no minimum.
I'll take a dollar." Four UT companies -- O.C. Tanner,
Questar, Intermountain Health, and Marker -- have
contributed cash, goods or services (DESERET NEWS, 6/27).
MORE NOTES: In Pittsburgh, Lori Shontz wrote that the
IOC's selection of Turin over Sion to host the 2006 Games
"may come back to haunt" them, as "Swiss politicians are
suggesting that it may be time to delve more deeply into the
IOC's ... tax-exempt status" in Lausanne (PITTSBURGH POST-
GAZETTE, 6/26). In Philadelphia, Bob Ford wrote that the
IOC "allowed Turin to overcome its image as a sowewhat gray,
largely industrial city" with the selection. Ford: "Turin
is to Italy what Detroit is to the United States"
(PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 6/27)....In N.Y., Joe Lapointe wrote
that the Thrashers' "corporate backing and executive lineup
suggest that this fledgling franchise could already be an
influential player ... on major issues such as Olympic
     participation in 2002" (N.Y. TIMES, 6/26).
