The Dallas 2012 Olympic bid committee "released a draft
Thursday of possible venue sites ... offering the first
glimpse of what the global event might look like in North
Texas," according to Michael Saul of the DALLAS MORNING
NEWS. Committee Chair Tom Luce met with officials from Ft.
Worth, Richardson and Plano and said that he "plans to meet
with every city" in the Dallas-Ft. Worth region. Committee
spokesperson Kevin Sullivan said that the draft was "simply
a starting point" and added that the Dallas 2012 Board of
Directors will "vote on which sites will be submitted in the
bid" next year. Committee officials did "not yet have an
estimate on how much the modifications" would cost to
upgrade each venue selected in order to "meet Olympic
specifications" would cost or a "blueprint on how to pay for
them," but said that the Games would be a "private sector
initiative and that taxpayers will not be responsible for
funding the event" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 6/25). In Ft.
Worth, Mede Nix wrote that the bid committee "wants most
events within an hour's drive of downtown Dallas."
Committee consultant Paul Winston: "A major chunk of the
existing facilities are in those areas, although we're not
ruling out other locations" (STAR-TELEGRAM, 6/25).
