NFL LEAGUE NO EUROPEAN VACATION TO PRESIDENT OLIVER LUCK

In NFL Europe's World Bowl '99 yesterday at Rhein
Stadium in Dusseldorf, Germany, the Frankfurt Galaxy
defeated the Barcelona Dragons in front of 39,643 fans. In
N.Y., Edmund Andrews examined the seven-year-old league and
wrote: "Marketing American football in Europe is about as
strange as teaching cricket in Texas." More Andrews: "After
nine years, the N.F.L. and [NFL Europe President Oliver]
Luck are still struggling to secure a foothold on a
continent ruled by soccer." Luck, 39, "markets his sport as
entertainment, with loud music, long-legged cheerleaders
... and stunts worthy of P.T. Barnum." Andrews wrote that
"the league now brings in about $30 million a year." In
Germany, NFL Europe "has attracted serious" commercial
sponsors, including Ericsson and Skoda, the Czech subsidiary
of Volkswagen." Skoda Dir of Communications Frank Farsky:
"Football is a show. It's always been about cheerleaders
and music and Americana" (N.Y. TIMES, 6/27).
