LEAGUE NOTES

          In Akron, Terry Pluto profiles the Women's Pro Softball
     League (WPSL) and writes that "there is much to like" about
     the WPSL Akron Racers, including ticket prices that don't
     exceed $7 and an average attendance of just under 1,000
     (AKRON BEACON JOURNAL, 6/24)....An IRL team is on sale at
     online auction site eBay, with a high bid of $1,000,500 for
     Team Pelfrey.  Bidding for the team ends tomorrow (STAR-
     NEWS, 6/24)....ATP Tour player Jim Courier, on the WTA Tour
     players asking for equal pay at Grand Slam events: "The
     discrepancy between women's prize money on their normal tour
     events is I think 5-to-1. ... So I think that's their real
     problem.  They should be concentrating on getting their
     tour's purses up. ... Just look at supply and demand: our
     tour makes more money than theirs" (STAR-LEDGER, 6/24).
