CANADIAN GOV'T INKS C$950,000 DEAL W/CFL FOR LOGO PLACEMENT

The CFL and Canadian federal government will announce a
promotional deal "in the next day or two" under which the
league will receive C$950,000 in exchange for having players
wear "decals on their helmets" featuring the Canadian flag
on one side and a Canada logo on the other, according to
Joanne Ireland of the EDMONTON JOURNAL. There will also be
"signs of the partnership" at playoff games and the Grey
Cup. The money will be "split among the eight" CFL teams.
CFL President Jeff Giles: "It's great news for all our
teams, but it took four years of hard work. This is not an
overnight success." The Canadian government previously paid
the Canadiens "about" C$500,000 and the CFL Alouettes
C$250,000 for placing the Canada logo on the Molson Centre
ice and at Molson Stadium, respectively. The Expos received
C$909,500 for "an ad campaign" and ads were also purchased
at the Corel Centre for C$370,000 (EDMONTON JOURNAL, 6/23).
