HAS THE SUN AND SURF OF CA MELLOWED OUT LARRY LUCCHINO?

San Diego "has come to know" Padres President LARRY
LUCCHINO "as multifaceted and driven," according to Ron
Donoho of SAN DIEGO MAGAZINE, who profiles Lucchino and
writes that Lucchino "comes off as brilliant, organized,
funny, personable and a reasonable human being." While
press reports have that Lucchino has "mellowed" since moving
to CA, Donoho writes that "mellow is relative." Asked if he
is "as tough and mean as reputed," Lucchino said, "I am
aggressive, and I'm assertive in stating the needs of the
Padres." San Diego Mayor SUSAN GOLDING, who says that
Lucchino "does have a temper" and is "difficult" to
negotiate with, adds, "He wants to negotiate every word and
every period. I think that's the lawyer in him." But
Golding believes Lucchino "cares about this city. ... People
give John Moores a lot of credit for being generous with his
money and for really caring. But I don't think Larry gets
that kind of credit, which he deserves" (SAN DIEGO, 6/99).
