EBERSOL SAYS PROPOSED FOOTBALL LEAGUE W/TURNER STILL A GO

NBC and Turner Sports execs met in San Antonio last
week to discuss their proposed spring football league but
"remain weeks or perhaps months away from a decision on
whether to launch in 2001," according to David Barron of the
HOUSTON CHRONICLE. NBC Sports Chair Dick Ebersol, on his
meeting with Turner Sports President Harvey Schiller and NBC
Sports President Ken Schanzer: "We're still grinding it out.
Harvey and Kenny have met with eight, maybe nine of the 16
cities that have expressed interest." If Houston gets a
franchise, it could be operated by Rockets Owner Les
Alexander. Barron: "The proposed launch for the league is
Memorial Day weekend in 2001, so Ebersol and NBC and Turner
probably have until Thanksgiving or perhaps early December
to decide whether to proceed" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 6/20).
