THE LORD STANLEY GIVETH CREATIVES, AND THE NHL TAKETH AWAY

The NHL and Sabres spent much of the Stanley Cup Finals
trying to "crack down on unauthorized use of hockey's most
revered icon," according to Sharon Linstedt of the BUFFALO
NEWS. In the NHL's effort to "monitor unsanctioned cup and
team references," a regional Pizza Hut campaign, featuring a
character named, "Stanley Kupp," was "yanked from Buffalo
airwaves" because the league concluded "that Stanley Kupp,
no matter how you spell it, still evoked images" of the
Stanley Cup. NHL VP/Legal Affairs Mary Sotis: "Ads like
these are cute and funny, but the bottom line is that
ultimately, the consumer would make the connection to the
Cup without our authorization." The NHL also "ordered
Fowler's Chocolates to halt production of milk-chocolate
Stanley Cup-shaped candy." Sotis: "In general, these
companies don't have bad intentions and ... are very
cooperative when we contact them" (BUFFALO NEWS, 6/18).
