TV MONITOR: Last night's 11:00pm ET edition of "FSN
Primetime" (Fox Sports South) led with the Lakers hiring
Phil Jackson, followed by an update on the Knicks-Spurs in
progress. CNN/SI's "Sports Tonight" led with Jackson,
followed by the Wizards hiring Gar Heard. ESPN's
"SportsCenter" (which was delayed until 11:30pm ET and
broadcast on ESPN2 due to "Wednesday Night Baseball"), led
with Maurice Greene breaking the 100-Meter Dash World Record
in Greece, followed by the Rangers-Yankees (THE DAILY).
FSN's Keith Olbermann: "Were track and field still a primary
sport in this country, this would've been tonight's top
story -- this month's top story" ("FSN Primetime," 6/16).
ANYTHING YOU CAN DO ...: The WALL STREET JOURNAL's
Erica Schacter profiles females in sports broadcasting, and
writes that while female sportscasters "had been popping up
for decades," they are now "entrusted with a bit more
substance." CBS NFL reporter Bonnie Bernstein said that "as
a woman in sports broadcasting, you have to have a thick
skin," and WFAN's Suzyn Waldman adds, "I admire anyone who's
lasted in the business for more than five minutes" (WALL
STREET JOURNAL, 6/17)....CNN/fn's "Biz Buzz" reported that
Paul Allen's Charter Communications has agreed to carry
Oxygen, a new female-oriented cable channel. Allen has also
agreed to invest $100M in the channel (CNN/fn, 6/16).
MORE NOTES: CTV's Outdoor Life Network and SportsNet
will air stops on the FIVB World Beach tour and Canada's
Labatt Blue Pro Beach Tour for its "allure" and "potential
for capturing young audiences." CTV Outdoor Life Net
Programming Manager Dave Purdy, on beach volleyball: "It's
young, it's irreverent, it's a fast-paced summer sport."
The beach volleyball telecasts have averaged 2,000 viewers
since they began at the end of May (TORONTO STAR, 6/17).
