MEDIA NOTES

          TV MONITOR: Last night's 11:00pm ET edition of ESPN's
     "SportsCenter" led with Game Four of the Stars-Sabres,
     followed by news on the Lakers' hiring of Phil Jackson. 
     "FSN Primetime" (Fox Sports South) led with Jackson/Lakers,
     followed by Stars-Sabres.  CNN/SI's "Sports Tonight" led
     with Stars-Sabres, followed by Twins-Red Sox (THE DAILY).   
           NHL: DAILY VARIETY's Tom Bierbaum writes that with two
     Stanley Cup Finals game, Fox's average rating for the 18-49
     demo "slipped" to 2.6/9, its lowest since August 5-11, 1996
     (DAILY VARIETY, 6/16).  In Toronto, William Houston reports
     that CBC's "Hockey Night In Canada" drew 1.641 million and
     1.723 million viewers, respectively, for Game One and Two
     for the Stanley Cup Finals, and the two game average is
     about 18% above last year's (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 6/16).
          MORE NOTES: The FCC ruled that SpeedVision and the
     Outdoor Life Networks (OLN) "were not violating" rules by
     "withholding their service" from EchoStar, which the two
     nets claimed was "discriminating" against them for "lumping
     them in with another outdoor network on a stand-alone
     programming tier."  A breach of contract suit is still
     pending in federal court (DAILY VARIETY, 6/16)....TNT will
     now broadcast all Turner Sports golf programming (from TBS)
     beginning with the PGA Championship (TNT).
