NIKE SAYS THAT IT IS STILL ASSESSING TOUR TITLE SPONSORSHIP

Nike Golf President Bob Wood issued a statement on the
company's sponsorship of the Nike Tour: "We have a mutually
beneficial and long-term relationship with the PGA Tour, who
plans to continue elevating the Nike Tour. In partnership
with the PGA Tour, we are currently evaluating our long-term
business objectives and the opportunity to continue to be
the title sponsor beyond the year 2000" (Nike).
NOTES: In Charlotte, Anna Griffin writes on the battle
between the Pinehurst resort and the village of Pinehurst
over the use of the town name. Club Corp., which owns the
resort and "claimed Pinehurst was a protected trademark, ...
successfully pressured" several local golf courses and other
businesses to drop "Pinehurst" from their names (CHARLOTTE
OBSERVER, 6/16)....PGA Tour VP/Communications John Morris,
on the overcommercialization of golfers on tour: "We're not
concerned about (turning into NASCAR), because the players
are very concerned about their appearance." One agent, on
corporate logo placement: "The optimum space is on the
visor. You can get more money for a visor deal with a
player who's likely to get a lot of air time. If you've got
one kind of club and another kind of ball, you pit the two
against each other for visor space" (PALM BEACH POST, 6/13).
