M'S REJECT ROAD TRIP TO JAPAN, WANT FULL YEAR AT SAFECO

          Mariners officials sent a letter to MLB Commissioner
     Bud Selig's office on April 16 "asking that their club be
     removed from consideration" to be one of the teams to open
     the 2000 season in Japan, according to Bob Finnigan of the
     SEATTLE TIMES.  Mariners President Chuck Armstrong cited the
     team's "desire to play 'a full first season in Safeco Field'
     and not lose two home games."  Armstrong: "We wanted very
     much to participate ... but we realized that we simply had
     too many commitments to permit it" (SEATTLE TIMES, 5/26).
