FORMAT CHANGE FOR JCPENNEY EVENT: PGA SEEKS OUT NEW SPONSOR

The JCPenney Classic, which features LPGA and PGA Tour
mixed-team competition, will be "replaced by a PGA Tour
event in 2000," according to Mick Elliott of the TAMPA
TRIBUNE. The initial PGA Tour event in 2000 will be
scheduled in October, "directly opposite the Presidents
Cup." JCPenney had announced plans to end its sponsorship
of the mixed-team event, as it has "intentions to sponsor an
LPGA regular-season event at an undetermined location."
Efforts will now focus on landing the Tampa Bay event a
title sponsor, and Tournament Dir Gerald Goodman said if a
sponsor "has not been found" by 2000, the PGA Tour will "put
up" the event's $2.4M purse (TAMPA TRIBUNE, 5/25).
