NAMES IN THE NEWS

          TV MONITOR: Last night, the 11:00pm ET edition of "Fox
     Sports News Primetime" (Fox Sports South) and ESPN's
     "SportsCenter" led with the Knicks-Hawks game and followed
     with an update of the Blazers-Jazz game.  CNN/SI's 11:00pm
     ET "Sports Tonight" led with the Yankees-Red Sox game and
     followed with the Angels-Orioles game (THE DAILY). 
          NAMES: U.S. District Judge ROBERT MILLER ruled that
     disabled pro golfer FORD OLINGER would not be allowed to use
     a cart during a local qualifier for the U.S. Open under the
     ADA act.  Miller said that this case was different from the
     Casey Martin trial, as Martin "sought to use a cart on the
     PGA Tour, not just for" one even (N.Y. TIMES, 5/21)....In
     N.Y., Mitchell Fink reports that MICHAEL JORDAN's wife,
     JUANITA, is taking golf lessons (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 5/21).
     ...While there has been speculation the BILL RUSSELL TRIBUTE
     in Boston would be canceled or moved to a smaller venue, the
     BOSTON GLOBE's Michael Holley reports the event will take
     place Wednesday night at the FleetCenter.  Sources report
     that "more than" 7,000 tickets have been sold for the event
     (BOSTON GLOBE, 5/21)....MICHAEL OVITZ has teamed with RON
     BURKLE's Yucaipa Cos. to launch an e-commerce Web site that
     will sell music, videos and games.  The site is called
     CheckOut.com.  Ovitz and Burkle are partners in a bid to
     bring an NFL expansion team to L.A. (WALL STREET JOURNAL,
     5/21)....MIA HAMM has created the MIA HAMM FOUNDATION, with
     the support of Nike, Mattel and Gatorade.  The Foundation
     will raise funds for bone marrow disease research and female
     athletes, and can be reached online at www.miafoundation.org
     (Hamm Foundation)....GENE HACKMAN is "near a deal to join"
     KEANU REEVES in the football film, "The Replacements."  
     Hackman would play a pro football coach who "assembles a
     team made up of replacement players" (DAILY VARIETY, 5/21).
