FACILITY NOTES

In an extensive feature, the SEATTLE TIMES' Alex Fryer
examined how the cost of the Mariners' new Safeco Field
increased from $417M to a record $517M: "How the cost of the
new baseball stadium ballooned $100 million over original
forecasts is a complicated tale. ... The frenetic pace of
construction left little time for architects, engineers and
construction crews to take a breath and choose less costly
alternatives" (SEATTLE TIMES, 5/20)....The cost of the
Broncos' new stadium "has grown beyond" the $360M figure
used in last year's election campaign. The stadium board
approved a design and construction contract yesterday with
the price "left blank." The board promised to announce a
cost figure within a few weeks (ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS, 5/21).
