OLYMPIC NOTES

In Chicago, Philip Hersh writes on the legacy of IOC
President Juan Antonio Samaranch under the header,
"Samaranch's Legacy: Too Many Sports, Too Many Medals, Too
Little Control." Hersh: "It is gigantism that may represent
the greatest failure of Juan Antonio Samaranch's 19 years as
IOC president. ... The effects of the scandal will pass, but
the effects of Samaranch's failure to restrain Olympic
growth will haunt the Games" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 5/20)....IOC
VP Dick Pound, speaking at the Canadian Club of Vancouver,
on the Olympic Games: "Notwithstanding what you might
conclude if you only read the media, people really want this
Olympic movement to work. It is good and has values, no
question about it." On establishing a code of conduct: "The
problem before was that nobody cared about the IOC, until we
got some money. Now, there's interest in the public and we
have to accommodate that interest" (GLOBE & MAIL, 5/20).
