THE KING OF L.A.: ELWAY TO BE TEAM PRESIDENT AND PART OWNER?

John Elway and his wife Janet "met for two hours"
yesterday with Michael Ovitz at his home and then joined Eli
Broad and L.A. Mayor Richard Riordan at Broad's Sun America
headquarters to "explore the opportunity of becoming part
owner and president of an NFL expansion team in" L.A.,
according to T.J. Simers of the L.A. TIMES. Elway did not
attend afternoon press conferences "in order to avoid the
appearance of favoritism." Elway's attorney Marvin Demoff
said Elway is not in a position to make a decision, but
there "is no doubt he is very, very interested" in the L.A.
opportunity (L.A. TIMES, 5/14). Also in L.A., Steve Dilbeck
writes that Elway "has suddenly become the golden boy in the
battle between the two competing groups" bidding for the
expansion team. Broad: "We didn't discuss percentages, but
we prefer whoever is in management to also be an owner. We
like linking ownership and management" (L.A. DAILY NEWS,
5/14). Mayor Riordan, asked if he sat in on the Ovitz/Elway
     meeting: "I wasn't invited" (L.B. PRESS-TELEGRAM, 5/14).
