ELWAY MEETS WITH BOTH BROAD AND OVITZ IN L.A. CONFIDENTIAL

A "motivated" John Elway "accepted an NFL briefing" on
L.A. Tuesday and will meet Thursday with the two competing
ownership groups seeking an expansion team to play in the
L.A. Coliseum in 2002, according to T.J. Simers of the L.A.
TIMES. Broncos Owner Pat Bowlen: "Los Angeles offers John
an excellent opportunity, and I think there's an excellent
chance of it happening here." Elway told Simers that he was
"definitely interested in Los Angeles, and anxious to learn
more." Elway will meet with Eli Broad and then Michael
Ovitz, who "cut short a business trip" to N.Y. to "court"
Elway. Elway "might also meet later with others who have
yet to publicly express their intentions to own an expansion
team." Bowlen has offered Elway a minority ownership
position with the Broncos, but said, "I'm not ready to
retire yet. ... Unless I get hit by a truck, the job John
     wants won't be available" (L.A. TIMES, 5/12).
FUNNY GUY? A ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS editorial cartoon by
Drew Litton spoofs Elway's L.A. visit by showing Elway and
his wife, walking arm-in-arm, into "Divorce Court," with
"L.A. Ownership Group" written on Mrs. Elway's purse.
Meanwhile, a Bronco appears before a judge saying, "What Do
You Mean, He Doesn't Waste Any Time?" (5/12).
