POSITIVE SPIN: USOC OFFERS DETAILS ON SUMMER AD PUSH

The USOC is launching a $10M ad campaign, expected to
begin June 24th, to "help shift attention from the (IOC)
scandal," according to USA TODAY's Bruce Horovitz. Athletes
will be "front-and-center" in the push, which "initially"
will feature print ads, but "might expand" to TV. The USOC
"tapped" GSD&M, TX, to handle (USA TODAY, 4/30).
OLYMPIC NOTES: In Detroit, David Phillips reports that
GM will use the Olympics to "help rebuild its slumping" U.S.
market share. GM VP/Advertising & Corporate Marketing Phil
Guarascio: "We haven't seen anything on the horizon that
devalues the Olympics. Our original vision to use the
Olympics as a marketing platform is still valid." The
"bulk" of GM's Olympic spending will be an ad buy on NBC's
coverage. Beginning in 2000, the Olympic rings will be
featured in Oldsmobile advertising (DETROIT NEWS, 4/30).
...The Dallas 2012 Olympic bid committee "landed" the 2001
U.S. Weightlifting World Team trials (DMN, 4/29).
