WEB ENVY: GOLF ORGANIZATIONS SEEK BLOCK OF REAL-TIME SCORES

The PGA Tour and Augusta National recently "tried to
delay" two newspapers, the Florida Times-Union and the
Augusta Chronicle, from posting live golf scores on their
Web sites for 30 minutes, according to GOLF WORLD. The
organizations, believing "because they run the Players
Championship and Masters, respectively, they also have part
ownership of the news," felt the scores should be delayed in
order to "not only" protect their respective Web sites, but
"their licensees and partners (IBM, NBC, CBS, CBS-Radio),
too." But the newspapers called a delay "an infringement of
their First Amendment rights," and the Times-Union
"threatened to ignore coverage" of this year's FL PGA Tour
events. The PGA Tour "was the first to give in," citing two
reasons: Not being able to prevent anyone from posting
scores immediately after they appear on PGATOUR.com and a
similar situation in which Motorola won a case against the
NBA involving scoring pagers (GOLF WORLD, 4/16 issue).
