NHL MAY REVOKE PENGUINS FRANCHISE WITHOUT NEW OWNERSHIP

The NHL "may ask for court permission to revoke the
Penguins' franchise" if a reorganization plan for the team
isn't adopted soon, according to Kris Mamula of the
Pittsburgh TRIBUNE-REVIEW. NHL Senior VP/Legal Affairs
William Daly said that the NHL could "exercise drastic
options under its constitution" with U.S. Bankruptcy Court
approval, which includes selling "player contracts or the
entire team to another city," or "terminating the
franchise." Daly: "It's not that we're impatient. Time is
short. We can't be in a position of being halfway through
the summer and not knowing what the Penguins are doing."
Daly "declined" to give a drop-dead date for the Bankruptcy
Court to "adopt a plan," nor would he comment on "what the
league would do if its motion is approved by U.S. Bankruptcy
Court Judge Bernard Markovitz" (TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 4/20).
