LEAGUE NOTES

A Canadian "Open Ice" Summit designed to focus on "the
future of Canadian hockey development," is set to be
announced today and scheduled for August 25-28. In Toronto,
Damien Cox writes that the meeting "has the potential to ...
become a pivotal point in the next stage of our nation's
hockey growth. It also has the potential to be a complete
waste of time." Rangers C Wayne Gretzky will serve as the
Summit's honorary Chair, while "HNIC" analyst Don Cherry is
"the most noticeable absentee on the list" of those
attending (TORONTO STAR, 4/13). The "Open Ice" advisory
board includes NHL VP Colin Campbell, Canadiens President
Ronald Corey, Maple Leafs President & GM Ken Dryden and
NHLPA President Trevor Linden (TORONTO SUN, 4/13).
NOTES: Two Letters to the Editor appear in the WALL
STREET JOURNAL in response to Padres Owner John Moores' op-
ed last week (See THE DAILY, 4/6). Claremont Institute
President Larry Arnn and Associate Professor of Finance at
Stanford's Graduate School of Business Jeffrey Zwiebel both
argue that MLB should refrain any league-mandated revenue
sharing and let the free market work (WALL STREET JOURNAL,
4/13)....White Sox Chair Jerry Reinsdorf, on the replacement
strategy during the '94-95 strike: "The replacement strategy
would have worked. We made a wrong decision. I was the
lone voice in the wilderness. Nobody would listen to me"
(USA TODAY, 4/13)....Opening Day rosters of MLB's 30 teams
included 178 players born outside the U.S., representing
21.2% of the 841 players (MLB).....In S.F., David Steele, on
the state of the NBA: "If ever a slogan fit the lockout-
     delayed, schedule-compressed, jet-lagged, rubber-legged,
rim-clanking, fan-unfriendly NBA of today, it would be this:
     'Man, Am I Tired'" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 4/13).
