BIDDING FOR 'SKINS HEATS UP AS ANGELOS, GROSSMAN PLAN MOVES

Orioles Owner Peter Angelos "is contemplating offering
at least" $625M for the Redskins and Jack Kent Cooke
Stadium, according to sources of Mark Maske of the
WASHINGTON POST. Sources close to Angelos said that the
Orioles owner could potentially add investors to what would
become a prospective ownership group. Though Angelos
refused to discuss details of his plans, he said that "he
soon will decide whether to renew his pursuit of the team
and the stadium." Angelos: "We are reviewing the matter.
We'll make a decision shortly" (WASHINGTON POST, 4/12)
SAM'S CLUB? Also in DC, Thomas Heath reported that AZ
business exec Sam Grossman, who bid $680M for the Redskins
in January, announced Friday that he will head an investor
group in a second attempt to acquire the team and the
stadium. The group will also be led by FedEx Founder &
Chair Fred Smith and will include former Redskins head coach
Joe Gibbs as an equity partner and team consultant, along
with several DC area business execs. Grossman: "Fred and I
are extremely anxious to pursue this." The Jack Kent Cooke
estate trustees "could decide by next week how and when the
sale of the team will proceed" (WASHINGTON POST, 4/10).
SALE NOTES: A WASHINGTON POST editorial called Cooke
and Snyder "good candidates," and stated, "It's long past
time the NFL gave due consideration to the wishes of
Washington area fans" (WASHINGTON POST, 4/11). In Boston,
Will McDonough noted a source who said that Patriots Owner
and Finance Committee Chair Robert Kraft "negotiated the
settlement" between Howard Milstein and the NFL at the
owners' meeting in Atlanta last week (BOSTON GLOBE, 4/10).
