Howard Milstein and his brother Edward met with
Steelers President Dan Rooney on Thursday in order to begin
"discussions" with NFL team owners who don't support their
group's bid to purchase the Redskins and Jack Kent Cooke
Stadium, according to Leonard Shapiro of the WASHINGTON
POST. Rooney met with the Milsteins for about 90 minutes in
Phoenix, but Milstein's partner Daniel Snyder did not
participate in the talks. Rooney described the session,
which also included his son, Arthur, who is an attorney, as
"a very congenial meeting." Rooney: "I'm still taking the
same position I've always had. I want to hear what the
finance committee has to say" (WASHINGTON POST, 3/23).
HOW'D IT GO? In DC, Rick Snider reports that league
sources said Milstein's attempt to win Rooney's support "was
not successful." Snider notes that Milstein "needs strong
support from Rooney and [NFL Commissioner Paul] Tagliabue if
he is to have any chance of such a dramatic turnaround,"
because Rooney "controls a few votes from longtime friends,
and a recommendation from Tagliabue also could muster
significant support" (WASHINGTON TIMES, 3/23).
