UNIVERSAL MARKETING EYES SPONSORS FOR NEW LEGENDS HOOP TOUR

MN-based Universal Marketing & Entertainment has
unveiled plans for the "Legends Tour," a series of
basketball exhibition games that will feature retired NBA
greats such as James Worthy, Otis Birdsong, Spencer Haywood
and Michael Cooper. Universal Marketing's Arthur Carlson
told THE DAILY that "roughly" 30 games are planned for the
tour in '99 and that the games will be played "primarily" in
NBA arenas. Carlson anticipates that "about 80 players"
will participate in the games, with rosters "consistent with
the cities" in which the games will be played. Part of the
event proceeds will be earmarked for a pension fund for the
participating players who were in the NBA before the
league's pension fund was established in 1965. Universal
Marketing is in "preliminary talks" with both sponsors and
cable networks, but Carlson declined to give details.
Sponsorships will be sold either for "specific locations" or
for blocks of games (THE DAILY).
