VIEWERS TO HAVE A SAY IN ESPN CLASSIC'S NEW PROGRAM ROSTER

ESPN Classic will unveil a new programming lineup on March 1 in an "effort to make its schedule more consistent for viewers," according to BRANDWEEK. The network will run a listing of "classic sports moments" on ESPN.com each week, beginning on Sundays. Site visitors will be able to vote on their favorite moment until that Thursday, and the one selected most often will appear on ESPN Classic the following Sunday at 7:00pm ET. ESPN Classic also plans to introduce "theme weeks," such as "Upset Week" and "Dynasty Week," during the first week of every month, as well as "mini-marathons" for weekend afternoons and late afternoon blocks that will target "younger viewers" (BRANDWEEK, 2/24). In Baltimore, Milton Kent writes that ESPN Classic's new programming strategy also includes a "sport-specific weeknight prime-time schedule." The network will devote Monday night to golf and MLB shows, while Tuesday will have NFL and boxing-related coverage. Wednesday will feature college football and either the NBA or ESPN's "SportsCentury" series, while Thursday will highlight MLB and the NFL. Friday will feature a documentary series and auto racing (SUN, 2/26). In Detroit, Steve Crowe writes that Classic "has found a nice niche" (FREE PRESS, 2/26).
