WHY THE 'SPOS WILL STAY IN CANADA? MR. BROCHU TOLD THEM SO!

Expos President Claude Brochu denied reports yesterday
"that he has already been preparing the next stop on his
career path in Washington, DC, a potential home for the
Expos should the team leave Montreal," according to
Stephanie Myles of the Montreal GAZETTE. Brochu, who said
that there has been no contract signed or negotiations about
a "supposed" five-year deal in DC: "Don't forget one thing:
the orientation I have, and the orientation of [MLB], is on
Montreal." Brochu did say that "he has been approached"
about relocating the team, but emphasized that "he hasn't
even said hello, and hasn't returned any calls." Brochu: "I
assure you that there has been nothing done on that front
and that our orientation ... is in Montreal. It will stay
that way for the moment" (GAZETTE, 2/25). Brochu denied
reports he was offered $650,000 a year for five years to
remain as Expos President if they moved to DC (CP, 2/25).
