ADVERTISERS WON'T BE GOING TO THE (SPRE)WELL ANYTIME SOON

The marketability of Knicks F Latrell Sprewell is
examined by Matthew Kauffman of the HARTFORD COURANT, who
writes that Sprewell may suffer a "big financial hit" from
the "cold shoulder he faces from Madison Avenue," as
companies involved in sports marketing "won't be calling" on
him for now. Univ. of MA Sports Marketing Professor William
Sutton: "I don't think anybody touches him right now. You
can try the Rodman thing, the Agassi thing and capitalize on
the bad-boy image, but I think that would be a mistake. To
market him now would be a mistake." Chicago-based Burns
Sports President Robert Williams: "I think there needs to be
some time before advertisers consider him." Williams and
Sutton agree that Sprewell will "remain untouchable until at
least next season." Williams said, "For 1999, he's dead,"
but Kauffman writes that "in the world of sports, 'dead' is
often a temporary affliction" (HARTFORD COURANT, 2/19).
