STEELERS PUMP UP THE VOLUME: JUMP TO FM FOR FLAGSHIP RIGHTS

The Steelers have changed flagship radio stations from
WTAE-AM to WDVE-FM, becoming the 14th NFL team to have an FM
flagship, according to Chuck Finder of the PITTSBURGH POST-
GAZETTE. The three-year agreement comes with a rights fee
"approaching" $1.5M a year for WDVE, a member of Chancellor
Media Corp. WDVE Program Dir Garrett Hart: "For us, the
Steelers have been a goal for some time. The timing was
right." KDKA-AM lost out on the broadcast rights, despite
offering more money than WDVE, due to Steelers President Dan
Rooney's concerns about conflicting Pirates-Steelers games.
The Steelers said they "didn't want to leave their fans
searching the dial for their broadcasts." Rooney: "We've
been in that position before; we didn't want to be farmed
out." Finder reports that the Steelers broadcast radio team
of Myron Cope, Bill Hillgrove and Tunch Ilkin "will remain
     in place" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 2/18).
