The NFL Finance Committee "wants to see more financial
documentation supporting" Howard Milstein and Daniel
Snyder's $800M offer to purchase the Redskins, according to
Thomas Heath of the WASHINGTON POST. The eight-member panel
met for 90 minutes in Atlanta yesterday with league
financial and legal staffers, the second such meeting since
Milstein and Snyder reached a deal to buy the Redskins on
January 11. NFL Senior VP/Public & Governmental Relations
Joe Browne said after the meeting that the league "wants to
examine the Milstein-Snyder offer more closely because of
its debt, holding out the likelihood that the sale will be
voted up or down" at the March owners' meeting in Phoenix.
Browne: "The proposed sale involves a high level of
financing -- borrowing." Though there is some opposition to
Milstein and Snyder in the NFL, a source on the finance
committee said that the committee's support of them "will
hold and they will be approved by the committee and the
overall ownership" (WASHINGTON POST, 2/16). League sources
said that NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue told Milstein "not
to expect a decision" on the sale until at least April 1,
meaning the sale might not be voted on during the owners'
meeting in March (Rick Snider, WASHINGTON TIMES, 2/15).
ARE MILSTEIN/SNYDER UNITED? MLS Commissioner Doug Logan
said last week that he "anticipates being contacted by"
Milstein and Snyder about investing in the DC United if the
NFL approves their bid for the Redskins, according to Steven
Goff of the WASHINGTON POST. The team could provide another
tenant for Jack Kent Cooke Stadium (WASHINGTON POST, 2/13).
