          Denver Post sports columnist TODD PHIPERS died on
     Wednesday after battling cancer since last fall.  He was 58
     (DENVER POST, 2/11)....JAY LENO will drive the Chevrolet
     Monte Carlo pace car at the start of the Indy 500 on May 30
     (Mult., 2/12)....The PADRES will announce today that they
     have invited GARTH BROOKS to spring training for a tryout
     with the MLB club.  Padres Owner John Moores: "He's got an
     athletic build and a big pair of wheels" (AP, 2/12).
     ...Boston Globe columnist DAN SHAUGHNESSY paid $1,050 in a
     live auction at the GENESIS FUND CELEBRITY SKI CLASSIC for a
     night with three guests at Fenway Park in an executive suite
     with VP/GM DAN DUQUETTE.  Shaughnessy: "There was only one
     other serious bidder, and I still believe he was a Red Sox
     plant" (BOSTON GLOBE, 2/11)...PRINCE MALIK ADO IBRAHIM, the
     son of a Nigerian tribal king, has joined an investment bank
     to buy controlling interest in the F-1 Arrows Grand Prix
     team in a $125M deal.  Ibrahim: "I can start a revolution
     like TIGER WOODS did in golf. There's no reason why the next
     MICHAEL SCHUMACHER can't be black" (AUTO WEEK, 2/11 issue).
