IMG/CHASE SPORTS CAPITAL LOOKS TO THE BARBER SHOP FOR DEAL

IMG/Chase Sports Capital Partners agreed to buy an 80%
stake of Skip Barber Racing School for between $25-35M,
according to Daniel Kaplan of the SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL.
The investment in the school is the first acquisition for
Sports Capital. Kaplan writes that Barber is the "leading
trainer of professional and amateur race car drivers in the
country." Sports Capital Partners is a venture between IMG,
Chase Manhattan and Whitehall Financial Group
(SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 2/8 issue). The WALL STREET
JOURNAL reports the value of the deal depends "on
performance incentives over the next three years" (WALL
STREET JOURNAL, 2/10). Barber will retain an ownership
stake and continue as its CEO. Sports Capital Managing
Partner David Moross told Robin Sidel of REUTERS that the
fund contains about $102M, and he hopes to raise $100M from
private investors: "Since we started, we have seen about 250
potential transactions. No one else has gone out to focus
on this as a financial buyer" (REUTERS, 2/10).
