GIULIANI PUSHES FOR CABLEVISION TO OPERATE SPORTS COMPLEX

N.Y. Mayor Rudy Giuliani "upped the ante" in his West
Side "sports corridor" plan Thursday by saying that a
private company such as Cablevision "should run the whole
thing," according to Robert Hardt of the N.Y. POST.
Giuliani has proposed building a new domed stadium and a new
MSG across from the state-owned Javits Convention Center on
Manhattan's West Side. Giuliani said he "liked the idea of
linking Madison Square Garden to a new indoor larger arena
that could also be considered as possibly being privatized
for management by [Cablevision-owned] Madison Square
Garden." Giuliani noted that Cablevision's response to the
plan was "very, very favorable," while Cablevision Chair
Charles Dolan said in a statement, "Everything we have
worked on together with the city has been positive" (N.Y.
POST, 1/22). In N.Y., Frank Lombardi reports that NY Gov.
George Pataki "was caught by surprise" by Giuliani's stadium
plan last week (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 1/22).
