LEAGUE NOTES

MLB: Rockies Owner Jerry McMorris, on MLB's payroll
disparity: "We're not owned by a Murdoch, Disney or Ted
Turner, and baseball can't afford the kind of imbalance
where the Dodgers' Kevin Brown alone makes twice the
Montreal Expos' entire payroll." McMorris, who added that
baseball needs an improved revenue sharing plan, said that
the Rockies "have no intention of becoming the Pittsburgh
Penguins of baseball" (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 1/21).
IBL: The IBL will start its 64-game schedule on
November 26 with teams in Albuquerque, Baltimore,
Cincinnati, Jacksonville, Las Vegas, St. Louis, Richmond,
San Diego, Tampa Bay and Trenton (IBL).
NHL: In Las Vegas, Dean Juipe wrote that the NHL is "in
danger of losing its status as the fourth of America's four
major sports," as the PGA Tour "is poised to supplant the
NHL." The league's growth curve is "flat" (L.V. SUN,
1/19)....NHL VP Gary Meagher said that there have been "no
discussions" about starting a women's pro hockey league
dubbed the WNHL. Canada National Women's Hockey team member
Geraldine Heaney said, "We just don't have the players right
now at this level" (NATIONAL POST, 1/21).
