HERE WE COME A-SELLING OUR MERCHANDISE SO GREEN

The effect of the Jets' success on their attendance and
merchandise sales and on endorsements for the team's players
and Coach Bill Parcells is examined by Richard Sandomir of
the N.Y. TIMES. Steve Kurland, a NY Cadillac dealer who has
Parcells as an endorser: "We've had entertainers and other
sports celebrities represent us, but Bill Parcells owns this
town." The Jets are 11th in licensed-merchandise sales, up
from 19th in '97. NFLP spokesperson Chris Widmaier: "The
Jets are one of the three hottest teams in the country,
behind the Vikings and the 49ers. Retailers are selling
1,000 Jets jerseys every day." Starter, the Jets' official
on-field and sideline licensee, said that Jets sales "have
doubled this year, and rank only behind the Vikings" on its
eight-team NFL roster. Jerseys bearing WR Wayne Chrebet's
name and number are "far and away Starter's Jets best
sellers, followed by" those of WR Keyshawn Johnson and QB
Vinny Testaverde (Richard Sandomir, N.Y. TIMES, 12/22).
