O' LITTLE TOWN OF BALTIMORE: ORIOLES LEAD MLB IN AVG SALARY

          Final figures released by the MLBPA show that the
     average increase in MLB salaries "slowed to" 4.7% in '98,
     with the average salary rising to $1,398,831 from $1,336,609
     in '97, according to Ronald Blum of the AP.  The Orioles set
     a record for average team salary at $2,761,464, followed by
     the Yankees, Rangers and Braves, all over $2M.  The Expos
     finished with the lowest average salary at $306,162, and the
     Marlins, who were fifth in '97 at $1,793,766, dropped to
     28th at $462,381 (Ronald Blum, AP, 12/22).
