'TIS THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY -- SO RAISE OUR SALARIES, EH?

A one-page letter delivered to the CFL from CFLPA
President Dan Ferrone "demanded" that the C$2.1M salary cap
for each team "be raised significantly" for the '99 season,
according to Marty York of the Toronto GLOBE & MAIL.
Ferrone, who is "receiving counselling and assistance" from
the NFLPA, said that players received 43% of CFL revenue,
down from "between" 70% to 80%. York writes that the
players are "tired and almost embarrassed" at the C$43,000
average salary, down from C$62,000 four years ago. A
veteran CFL QB: "The time has come for us to stop being peed
on in this league. It's time for the owners to start
realizing we're not urinals." The CFL's CBA will be
discussed by league officials and team owners at meetings in
Toronto on January 7-8. CFL President Jeff Giles: "This
league simply cannot afford to increase expenses in any way
this point" (Marty York, Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 12/22).
