MEDIA NOTES

Sports Illustrated named Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire as
their '98 Sportsmen of the Year. The two will be featured
on the cover of the December 21 issue (SI)....In Boston,
Frank Dell'Apa writes on MLS Commissioner Doug Logan's
criticism of the media's non-coverage of the InterAmerican
Cup in Miami in early December: "Now that Logan has the
execs' attention, he should bolster his contentions with
some ratings of his own, some concrete figures derived from
FIFA and/or the Soccer Industry Council of America" (BOSTON
GLOBE, 12/15)....Petersen Cos. is in talks to be acquired by
British media company Emap, reportedly for $1.2B. Among
Petersen titles include Sport magazine (L.A. TIMES, 12/15).
...In N.Y., Richard Sandomir reports that CBS studio analyst
George Seifert is "on hiatus" from "The NFL Today."
Sandomir wonders if CBS's Marcus Allen or Brent Jones "will
be next to take a forced leave" (N.Y. TIMES, 12/15).
...BROADCASTING & CABLE's Glen Dickson profiles Lucent
Technologies partnership with the ATP Tour and notes that
Lucent has created LucentVision, which uses video cameras
and a Silicon Graphics workstation to track players'
movements in real-time, and then presents the information in
3-D. The ATP Tour will use LucentVision in its coverage
beginning in '99 (BROADCASTING & CABLE, 12/14 issue).
