Devils Owner John McMullen and Cablevision Chair
Charles Dolan "have teamed in a bid to purchase" the
Redskins and Jack Kent Cooke Stadium, according to Thomas
Heath of the WASHINGTON POST. The McMullen-Dolan duo is the
latest, "and possibly the last," of about eight bid groups
that "have been invited" to submit a second bid on December
22. Heath writes that McMullen and Dolan "are considered
formidable contenders to buy the Redskins." McMullen "did
not return recent phone calls," while a spokesperson for
Cablevision said he "did not know of any attempt by the
company to buy the Redskins" (WASHINGTON POST, 12/11).
THE GIBBS FACTOR: In DC, Thomas Boswell writes that Joe
Gibbs' decision to align with Sam Grossman "is hardly a vote
of confidence" in Redskins President John Kent Cooke.
Boswell: "As long as Grossman has his arm intertwined with
the returning hero Gibbs, it's hard to see how he -- and Joe
-- can get left out of the final picture" (WASHINGTON POST,
12/11). Also in DC, Liz Clarke writes that Gibbs'
affiliation with Grossman, "no matter how open-ended, could
prove to be a potentially decisive weapon in the battle to
buy the Redskins" (WASHINGTON POST, 12/11). In DC, Mark
Maske writes some team officials are "uncomfortable with the
fact that Gibbs is competing with the Cooke family instead
of working with it." Cooke has "steered clear of the
matter," saying through a team spokesperson, "I have no
comment at this time" (WASHINGTON POST, 12/11).
