SUPPORT FOR 49ERS IS HIGH, BUT STADIUM ISSUE DIVIDED

A S.F. CHRONICLE poll found that 45% of registered
voters said that 49ers co-Owner Eddie DeBartolo "should be
allowed to regain control" of the team, while 26% said he
should not and 29% did not know, according to Matier & Ross
of the S.F. CHRONICLE. Support for the team would "appear
to be as strong as ever," with 75% of respondents saying
that the team staying in S.F. is "very" or "somewhat"
important. But the poll also found voters "still sharply
divided" over the mall-stadium plan approved last June. Of
those surveyed, 45% said they would vote to overturn the
$100M stadium bond, compared with 44% who said they would
oppose the repeal -- if the measure was placed back on the
ballot. Matier & Ross: "If anti-stadium forces succeed in
placing a bond repeal measure on next year's ballot, the
city could be in for another bruising, seesaw battle."
Also, 77% said that they would not pay any more than the
$100M in public funds currently allotted for the new
stadium, while 18% said that they would. The telephone poll
was conducted by Baldassare Associates from November 5-8 and
surveyed 600 registered voters. The poll's margin of error
     is +/- 4% (S.F. CHRONICLE, 11/18).
