SALT LAKE LOOKING TO BOOST ITS VOLUNTEER ARMY

SLOC has begun its "drive to recruit 8,000 volunteers
for activities prior" to the 2002 Winter Games, according to
Mike Gorrell of the SALT LAKE TRIBUNE. SLOC ran a full-page
ad in Sunday's TRIBUNE which read, "Hard Work. No Pay.
Long Hours. Better Hurry," and included a mail-in coupon
where one can obtain a application form. SLOC is also
"encouraging potential volunteers to sign up via the
Internet." A 33-question application is available at
     www.slc2002.org. This sign-up is "only for pre-Games
activities." Registration for the Olympic Games will begin
"early in 2000." SLOC hopes to recruit about 18,000
volunteers for that effort (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 11/15).
JOBS AVAILABLE: SLOC currently has 128 employees on
payroll, "not counting a couple of dozen volunteers and
people on loan from sponsors." The committee has started to
move into additional office space in Salt Lake City. Some
"upper-middle management" positions are still open and SLOC
is running posts in the employment section of www.slc2002.
org, and the TRIBUNE's Gorrell noted that "Some pretty big
jobs are on the list" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 11/15).
OLYMPIC NOTES: In Houston, John Williams reports that
the city's business community came out in support of the
city and county effort for the 2012 Summer Games last night.
As part of the new effort, the bid committee officially
changed its name to Houston 2012 Foundation, whose members
include "top officials" from Enron Corp., Continental
Airlines, Houston Industries and Exxon (HOUSTON CHRONICLE,
11/17)....In Orlando, George Diaz wrote that Florida 2012
organizers "are more than one-third of the way" to their
corporate sponsorship base of $5.5M, though none of the
sponsors have been identified (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 11/13).
